There isn’t a best time of year to visit Paris. It is a glorious treat every month of the year. With an eclectic mix of places to stay it is a good idea to stay in more than one hotel if you have time.
Sitting out in one of the city’s unbeatable public spaces watching the Parisian world go by has to be one of the best things to do anywhere for free. The people of Paris are every bit as diverting as the grand architecture, whether they are in charming, shruggy, flirtatious, dismissive or garrulous mode.
Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower and the Champs Elysee are exciting to see but the real charm and memorable delight of a stay in Paris is usually in the details. The straight-backed grandmother in a long skirt riding her scooter. The sad-looking dog who crosses the bridge twelve times as you sit there.
The participants in the huge Friday night in-line skating event, the Pari-Roller, all shouting and laughing as they thunder past. The Frenchman/woman who gives you the look and puts a spring in your step for the rest of the day. The smell of smoke, the taste of a runny cheese, a coffee strong enough to make you wince.
As with most great cities, the way to see it is to walk everywhere. A boat trip on the Seine is expensive and as touristy as white trainers and a sun hat, but is a lovely way to look at the buildings. It is also a good way to get your bearings when you first arrive.
Driving in Paris is a great way to get a really authentic feel for the place but it is not for the faint-hearted. Family disputes about map-reading are at their most heated when half the Citroens in Paris are squeezing past honking.
There are a great many excellent hotels in Paris. Below we list a few of our favourites in every price range and further down offer you a more extensive list of the best places to stay in Paris.
Designed by architect Edouard François and designer Jacques Garcia to be a 21st Century Palace this lavish hotel has every modern touch and plentiful attentive service. Considered in the context of Paris to be achingly hip, in London it would probably be seen more as simply modern.
This flamboyant but beautifully designed hotel is full of Chinese influences from the hand-painted Chinese wallpaper to the jewel coloured silk sofas and porcelain lamps. Oriental antiques are everywhere. Great service and all the perks you would expect in this price bracket.
For A-lister and beautiful people spotting this is one of the top spots in Paris. The lively restaurant is deservedly popular throughout the day and it has a hammam as well as a conventional spa.
A gem of a hotel in a top notch location. Recently refurbished to very high standards, the rooms are stylish throughout, and ambience is homely and welcoming. No restaurant, but plenty of choice close by.
A rarity to find such a good value hotel in such a superb location, just five minutes walk from the Louvre. This chic property oozes eclectic style; the only downside being that some of the standard rooms are a little on the small side.
Charming, family run, boutique hotel in the heart of the Latin Quarter. Only ten bedrooms, but all are spacious and individually decorated. No restaurant on site, but the family also run a bistro across the road where you can sample traditional French fare.
A really good budget hotel for families. While simply decorated it has a very Parisian feel about it with plenty of unique touches including a collection of teapots. Accessible from the centre of the city, this 2 star hotel will even lend you a bicycle on which to whisk yourself back to the Champs Elysee.
The interiors of this hotel behind Sacre Coeur in the 18th Arondissment are frankly a bit Grannyish. Though flowery and a bit stuffy, the rooms are spacious although the bathrooms are tiny. The outside areas are superbly French - a terrace with exquisitely Parisian rooftop views and a lovely garden to sit in. Authentic and friendly.
This buzzy out-of-town Phillipe Starck designed hotel is well-worth a stay on your way into or out of Paris to the airport. Good value restaurant and bar with table football. Fun fun fun.
