Does Provence make you think of Lavender growing in fat straight rows, long lunches in drowsy medieval hilltop villages and family run vineyards? Then the chances are that you have read one of Peter Mayle's books about the region or seen the television series based on his stories. There is plenty of fantastic accommodation; our list of the best places to stay in Provence is below.

Our Two Top Choices

The Hotel Crillon le Brave in the village of the same name, is a particular favourite with tile-floored rooms decorated in cool blues and neutrals which are absolutely perfect for the area and architecture. The accommodation is spread amongst a cluster of old pink stone buildings linked by atmospheric cobbled alleys, and enjoys wonderful views of Mont Ventoux.

The family-run Les Florêts at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail is set in the heart of the owners' own vineyards. The Gigondas wine that they produce is available in the restaurant where many of the dishes on offer complement it beautifully. Homely furnishings with a delightful terrace for eating outside and excellent French service.

Best places to stay in Provence - Avignon

If you fancy a few nights in Avignon, La Mirande in the centre of the city, was created from a 14th century Cardinal's Palace. It's sumptuous bedrooms ooze romance and the food from its Michelin starred dining room is memorably delicious.

Best places to stay in Provence - B&B and Low-Key

  • La Manescale is a former shepherd's house set amid olive groves and vines. More like a home from home, it is filled with family furniture and paintings - there is even a library for guests to use if they've left the kindle at home.
  • Another B&B option would be the quirky La Ferme Rose on the outskirts of Moustiers. Its owner has a passion for collecting weird and wonderful things from soda syphons to shell lamps, all of which are incorporated into the property's design.
  • L'Hôtel Sous les Figuiers is situated in the small town of St Remy de Provence. A B & B with a difference, it doubles as an artist's workshop, where you can take painting classes if you want to release your inner Chagall.

Best places to stay in Provence - Arles hotels

  • For those wanting to be closer to some action, then the Hotel Spa Le Calendal should suit. Bang in the centre of Arles, it is the ideal base for checking out the Roman sites.
  • Another option in Arles would be the Grand Hôtel Nord-Pinus. This quirky townhouse was once the haunt of Picasso and Cocteau, and is still a hip address with a famous bar, beloved of the locals.
