Tarbes lies one and a half hours from the Atlantic and a mere thirty minutes from the nearest ski area. With a population of nearly 50,000, it is a busy town with all the attractions that you might expect. There are some interesting churches to visit, most notably the Notre-Dame-de-la-Sede Cathedral with its classical facade, and there is a museum dedicated to the Second World War French resistance. This is also the birthplace of Marshal Foch, the famous First World War commander.
There are some lovely parks and gardens in Tarbes. A definite ‘must see’ is the 23 acre Jardin Massey, established in the nineteenth century by Placide Massey, a horticulturalist at Versailles. It is on the list of ‘the ‘Remarkable Gardens of France’ and contains an orangery, the Hussar museum, a cloister and a School of Art and Ceramics, plus many rare trees and flowers.
Another visit not to be missed is one to the Haras de Tarbes. Set up by Napoleon in 1805 the building is set in the centre of town surrounded by eight hectares of land. You'll find a fascinating history, beautiful architecture and much more.
