Located close to Rajasthan’s Pali District, the little town of Kumbhalgarh is home to a not so little fort, second only to The Great Wall of China. Commissioned by Rana Kumbha of the Mewar dynasty it is a fortress of epic proportions, some 36 kilometres long. Dating back to the 16th century Kumbhalgarh Fort is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and boasts some impressive Madan architecture. An easy drive from Udaipur it makes for a wonderful visit outside of one of Rajasthan’s major cities. Our pick of the best places to stay in Kumbhalgarh all provide a historic stay and perfect location for exploring its ramparts.
Each evening Kumbhalgarh Fort is spectacularly lit for a light and sound show. There is also the annual festival, held towards the end of January, to celebrate the famous Maharana Kumbha’s love for art and architecture.

For a historic stay
- Enjoying a secluded spot The Aodhi boasts gorgeous rooms with colourful mosaic bathrooms. Dine under the stars with the rhythmic tabla for an accompaniment.
- Further afield, a reservation at the bougainvillea covered, 17th-century former fortress Rawla Narlai is to sleep amongst history. Some rooms feature original wall paintings; all are filled with antiques and local textiles, plus there is a gorgeous pool. An oasis in the heart of the Thar desert.
For tented luxury
- Excellent value and novel tented accommodation which children will love, The Dera Kumbhalgarh provides an authentic desert experience. It is envelopped by verdant forest and surrounds a tranquil pool. There is no wi-fi - which in our opinion means true escapism.
