About Bergamo

Architecturally beautiful Bergamo overlooks Italy's southern plains and offers not just wonderful views, but numerous art and dining opportunities. There are a good range of accommodation options across the city. The Upper Town, Città Alta, is one of the best places to stay in Bergamo if you are here for the city’s legendary historic atmosphere. Città Bassa is the modern town at the bottom of the hill, connected to the top by a funicular. Here you’ll find the best places to stay in Bergamo if you’re on a budget or prefer a more modern style of hotel.

Città Alta’s spiderweb of tiny streets is surrounded by 5 kms worth of Venetian walls. At the heart of it all is the Piazza Vecchia, lined with elegant architecture - both Renaissance and earlier - and cafes. The highest point is provided by the Torre del Campanone, a huge square tower which reaches 52 metres above the city. Charmingly the tower’s bell still rings out the curfew at 10pm.

Aside from that, the Città Alta offers architectural treats wherever you look. Behind several of the wonderful Palazzo’s facades are impressive collections of art - especially Italian. The Accademia Carrara is one of the best known. Then there’s the religious architecture and art; Bergamo’s baroque Duomo sits on top of Roman ruins and the Basilica de Santa Maria Maggiore is a wonderful blend of the best of Bergamo’s architectural styles.

This is a popular city, particularly during the summer months. So, if you want to bag a room in one of the best places to stay in Bergamo, we recommend booking well in advance.
