About Kyushu

Japan’s south-westernmost island, Kyushu is a magical land of active volcanoes, near-tropical coastline, rolling green hills and mountainside carpeted with the petals of rhododendrons. Brilliant for a hiking holiday, a rejuvenating hot spring hideaway or a culture-focused city break, Kyushu offers a vast array of attractions for guests of all ages, tastes and budgets. The best places to stay in Kyushu include intimate ryokans, chic seaside spots and smart city hotels.

This is an island rich in history and culture. Excavations near Kagoshima reveal that Jōmon culture spread north from Kyushu roughly 10,000 years ago, and it’s also where trade with China began. The region is peppered with 16th-century fortresses and ancient temples. Kumamoto Castle, surrounded with cherry blossom, is deemed one of the greatest in Japan, whilst the Fuki-ji Temple in the Oita prefecture and the Takachiho Shrine in Miyazaki are fascinating. Nature lovers, on the other hand, will adore hiking in the Kuju Mountains or Kiyomizuyama, exploring the scenic Nichinan coastline or sinking into the hot springs of Kurokawa Onsen, Yufuin and Beppu.

If you’re looking for a lively city break, head to Fukuoka — a foodie haven — or to Nagasaki. At the other end of the scale, the pint-sized island of Yakushima is perfect for romantic escapes and wildlife excursions. The best places to stay in Kyushu await!

The Best Places to Stay in Kyushu

For a Traditional Ryokan

  • Yufuin Hoteiya is just outside Yufuin, but feels wonderfully quiet. Perfect for those dreaming of an authentic ryokan experience, the hotel has tatami mats, paper shutters, and private hot spring baths. Lantern-lit evenings are gorgeous, and the seasonal menu of local dishes is fantastic. For quiet couples or individuals.
  • Unzen Fukudaya has a traditional feel, with hot spring baths and kaiseki cuisine. Guests can choose between futon beds and Western options in rooms with tatami matting and low seating areas. Very atmospheric, and a great base for exploring Unzen.
  • Ryokan Sanga is perched at the source of two hot water springs in Kurokawa. A brilliant choice for those looking to soothe aching muscles in typical onsen baths, it's also an intruiging ryokan in that it fuses classic design with more glass, enhancing tranquil forest views. Lovely.
  • Beppu Showaen takes the classic ryokan concept to the next level with individual Japanese houses set amidst lush, manicured grounds in Beppu. Each features tatami matting and futon bedding, beautiful garden views and an in-room or open-air hot spring bath. The multi-course gourmet Japanese meals are exceptional. For romantic couples or families and small groups.
  • Yufuin Gettouan Ryokan sits amidst picturesque woodland, just north of Yufuin. The 10 traditional rooms have tatami mat floors and low dining tables. Highlights include the onsen baths, the delicious regional fare and the forest views — particularly striking in the autumn months. A restful choice.

FOR CITY Style

  • Hotel Nikko Kumamoto is just moments from the acclaimed City Museum of Contemporary Art. Swish, contemporary rooms offer panoramic city views, big cosy beds and flat-screen TVs. Dine on French, Japanese or Cantonese fare after days of exploring. A cool, contemporary choice for business or leisure.
  • Hotel New Nagasaki features sleek interiors, with both Western and Japanese-style rooms. Feast on Chinese, Japanese and Western cuisine at three elegant restaurants. Meeting rooms and a business centre make this a top spot for a work trip.
  • Hotel Nikko Fukuoka is a modern hotel with eight restaurants, an indoor swimming pool and spa, and easy access to the city centre and the airport. Luxurious rooms have white and cream interiors and a classic feel. For business or leisure.
  • Amane Resort Seikai fuses cool, contemporary design with traditional Japanese elements to create a luxurious sea-facing base in Beppu. The 46 rooms and suites are spacious and offer family-friendly options — some also have private terraces with open-air baths. Unwind at the spa or hot spring baths, and dine on exemplary regional cuisine at the water's edge. Smart and soothing.
  • Hilton Fukuoka Sea Hawk offers fantastic ocean views from its waterfront setting. A huge high-rise with minimalist interiors, this is a smart choice for well-heeled holidaymakers as well as business travellers.

FOR Romance

  • Yufuin Rikka has just six luxurious rooms and suites. The hotel fuses classic Japanese style with modern minimalism to create more contemporary spaces. Expect crisp white bed linen, ergonomic chairs, small balconies and wood-clad walls. Add the gourmet cuisine and onsen baths, and you're in for a romantic treat.
  • With The Style Fukuoka is a chic 16-bedroom hotel with a lovely courtyard swimming pool, bar and two restaurants. Brilliant for intimate weddings and events, this is also a romantic base for couples looking to explore Fukuoka. Very cool.
  • Takefue is made up of luxurious lodges nestled within a bamboo forest near Kurokawa Onsen. Take restful soaks in natural hot spring baths, enjoy rejuvenating massages and feast on delectable cuisine at the restaurant. A hugely romantic boutique choice.
  • Sankara Hotel & Spa offers gourmet cuisine and expansive luxury suites in a gorgeous seaside setting on Yakushima. Set near the south-eastern corner of the island, this boutique hotel also offers beautiful views and rejuvenating massages. Very special.
  • Miyazaki Ryokan is a minimalist contemporary hotel — previously a traditional ryokan — close to the National Park. Expect stylish, pared-back rooms, bathrooms and shared spaces, expansive gardens and restful hot spring baths. Splendid gourmet cuisine completes the picture. Romantic and well-placed for immersing yourself in nature.

For Families

  • Huis Ten Bosch Forest Villa offers two-bedroom cottages set on the banks of a peaceful canal inside the Huis Ten Bosch Theme Park, just outside Nagasaki. Surrounded by flower-filled gardens, these cosy villas have pretty chintz-patterned interiors, waterfront views and sitting rooms for relaxing with family and friends. There's a good restaurant onsite. Idyllic.
  • Kumamoto Hotel Castle has elegant interiors with a classic feel. Pick this place for a romantic trip — the suites are generously appointed — or for a family holiday. Kumamoto Castle is minutes away on foot, and there are four excellent restaurants, so guests of all ages will find something that they love.
  • Suginoi Hotel is a big high-rise hotel in the hills overlooking Beppu and the sea. Spacious rooms, multiple swimming pools, a bowling alley, hot springs and a spa make this a top pick for families, groups or business travellers. Imposing, impressive and brimming with activities for little ones and grown-ups.
  • Hotel Nikko Huis Ten Bosch is an enormous property at the gates of the Huis Ten Bosch theme park, close to Nagasaki. Expect classic rooms with space for families, great restaurants and a buzzy karaoke bar. Very good fun.
  • Umikaoru Yado Hotel New Matsumi is a lovely traditional hotel with both communal and private hot spring baths. Gaze out to sea whilst immersing yourself in the restorative waters before retreating to your tatami-matted room. A classic ryokan with impressive sea views and large family rooms in Beppu. Simple and authentic.
