A perfect introduction to Portugal would include a dip into both city and countryside and nowhere is it better to do that than here, where Porto is surrounded by hills of vineyards which roll down to the magnificent Douro river. Whilst the traditions of the country have been diluted in the south by the influx of foreigners seeking sunshine, the north remains a stronghold of Portuguese culture, customs, character and cuisine. Porto, which gave its name to the country, as Portus and Cale were once two Roman settlements on either side of the river, is also famous for being home to that ‘nectar of the Gods’ – Port.
There is much to see in Porto – contemporary museums, baroque churches, colourful food markets displaying the city’s favourite dish of tripe, Medieval painted houses lining the river, and of course a plethora of Port houses, where you can taste your way through tawny, white, vintage, pink and more....
The order by which the hotels are listed bears no reflection on our preference.
