Allariz is an ideal base for exploring the pleasures of Galicia, it's only 15kms from the provincial capital, Ourense, but with a much slower, historic charm and a picturesque spot overlooking the Arnoia river. Allariz's cobbled, medieval heart is packed with interesting civic, military and religious constructions - from plazas and statues to palazzos and one of Spain's most impressive chapels. The best places to stay in Allariz are usually found in the old town or in the countryside surrounding the town.
One of Allariz's busiest times is during the Ox Festival. Unlike Pamplona, in Allariz only one bull has the run of these medieval streets at a time, tethered by rope to his handlers - though the bull is very much the driver! Every now and then the bull's keepers tether them to one of the large metal rings you'll see around town while they all take a breather.
If you want to come an see the Ox Festival, you'll have to plan ahead - the best places to stay in Allariz get booked up months in advance at this time of year.
