About Avilés

Avilés is an old port town with an elegant and historic old town. This is a great place to try Asturian food - seafood especially. It’s right on the estuary so it’s very flat, and surrounded by some lovely sandy beaches, Salinas being a popular one. The best places to stay in Avilés depend on why you’re visiting, but our Guru’s recommendations for the best places to stay in Avilés also includes some options which are closer to the coast in nearby fishing villages.

Avilés also has a couple of notable buildings and some interesting fortifications designed to protect from English pirates, and a significant 13th century church dedicated to St. Thomas of Canterbury. There are also a couple of interesting museums.

Just remember that this region will be busy during the summer months. So if you're planning a trip in July or August make sure that you book your pick of the best places to stay in Aviles well ahead.
