Bordered by France, La Rioja and the Basque Country, it's not surprising that Navarre is a well known destination for foodies. But its main visitors come either to run with the bulls in Pamplona or to walk the pilgrim's trail to Santiago. But Navarre has loads more to offer, and being a less-travelled destination, many of the best places to stay in Navarre are both spectacular and reasonably priced.
Navarre's north reaches into the Pyrenees, lush, green and dotted with small towns and villages which have a very Basque flavour to them. To the south you'll find the farmland and pastures. While most of Navarre's historic sights are in the Tierra Estella, around Estella, Puente La Reina and Viana - this is also the route of the Camino de Santiago, so expect some of Spain's most treasured churches as well as some surprisingly grand monuments to other religions.
But Pamplona, and the region around it, are where most of Navarre's population live and where most visitors will want to visit. It's packed out for Sanfermines, or the festival of the running of the bulls in July, but its lovely medieval centre, impressive citadel, great selection of museums and welcoming green spaces make this a wonderful city to visit at any time of year. You might have seen Pamplona in the press during Sanfermines, and thought it a bit hedonistic with the loud music, revelry all hours and bravado, but during the rest of the year it's a friendly, but reserved foodie's paradise.
- Aire de Bardenas is a designer hotel, in a minimalist style, in a remote setting amongst cornfields and a National Park. The minimalism makes the most of the beautiful setting, and the views are incredible. There's also a pool and great food, so you're in amongst nature but with all the mod. cons..
- Pago di Cirsus is a gracious vineyard with a 12 room country house hotel. As well as serving their own wine there's an excellent local menu and a romantic bar. Rooms are full of luxurious character.
