About Puebla de Sanabria

A small town set between the Tera and Castro Rivers, Puebla de Sanabria is one of the region’s oldest settlements. Close to the Portuguese border and dating back to the 6th Century, it has a fascinating history and is a wonderful base for exploring the Sanabria Lake Natural Park. Intimate and charming, the best places to stay in Puebla de Sanabria are perfect for outdoorsy travellers as well as relaxed couples looking to soak up the magic of the region.

Puebla de Sanabria’s most imposing landmark is undoubtedly the 15th-century Sanabria Castle, built by the Count of Benavente to overlook the town. Head up to admire dazzling views, and don’t miss the ruined Fort of San Carlos, just to the south. For a sense of the area’s religious history, step into the Romanesque-Gothic Church of Nuestra Señora de Azogue, or the beautiful Baroque Hermitage of San Cayetano. Set on a hillside, the town offers striking panoramas of the surrounding countryside.

Slightly to the north of town, the Sanabria Lake Natural Park is stunning. Visit the permanent exhibition at the San Martín de Cantañeda monastery for a sense of the Park’s geology, and follow hiking, cycling and horse riding trails through gorgeous unspoilt landscapes. Swimming, canoeing and sailing on the Sanabria Lake are also great fun during the summer months. Return to our pick of the best places to stay in Puebla de Sanabria for delicious regional cuisine.
