Kaş is a colourful little city in southernmost Turkey. It’s a great spot for exploring the archaeological treasures of the surrounding region, and while its beaches aren’t sandy, its rocky coves and rock shelves offer great opportunities for ocean swimming and underwater adventures. It is a great value destination and some of the best places to stay in Kaş have room rates which start from around £20 per night.
There’s not too much to see within Kaş proper, though there are some lovely little cafes, bars and restaurants. But just to the west of the old town you’ll find the Çukurbağ Peninsula, which is known for its Lycian rock tombs, the ancient city of Antiphellos and its wonderfully preserved ancient theatre which dramatically overlooks the ocean.
As well as being popular with divers, snorkelers and those fascinated by the ancient world, Kaş is also a great place to try sea kayaking. But if you’re not quite up to that you can still enjoy the views from the water, on one of many boat trips on offer. Kaş is also a great choice for cyclists, walkers and paragliders.
Kaş is also one of the best places to shop on the Turkish Riviera. Head to the long market, also known a ‘slippery street’ for a shopping experience famously high on quality and low on tourist tat.
Don't forget that the town is incredibly busy during the peak summer months, so if you want to bag one of the best places to stay in Kaş you will need to book well in advance. Otherwise you could come in May, June, September or October, when there'll still be plenty of sun, but without the crowds.
For a beach break
- The Gardenia Boutique Hotel offers five star facilities and clean modern lines just moments from the seafront and all the major sights of town.
- The Mediterraneo is on Kastellorizo, the tiny Greek island just off the coast of Kaş, but it’s a great option if you’re looking for sea bathing and a quiet, colourful boutique hotel.
For superb value
Kaş is a great destination if you’re on a budget.
- The Hotel Begonvil is excellent value: a 15 room pension with all the mod. cons. in a choice of rooms, suites and self catering apartments, and rates starting at around £20 per night. Many rooms also have a balcony and you’re just moments from the harbour bars and restaurants.
- The Hideaway Hotel is another great value option. It’s a small, friendly guesthouse with 20 rooms and some great views, right on the outskirts of Kas. And the room rate starts at around £25 per night.
