The string of some 15 communities that make up Santa Rosa Beach, stretching between Destin and Panama City on Florida’s Panhandle, lies along a gorgeous stretch of beaches and sand dunes over-looking the Gulf of Mexico. No wonder it has been dubbed the Emerald Coast. The best places to stay on Santa Rosa Beach are never far from mesmerising views of sea and sand.

Each of the settlements has an individual style; some arty, some laidback and some with an architectural theme such as Moroccan or Dutch. All are relaxed and family-friendly. One - Seaside - may seem familiar: it was the location for the movie The Truman Show. It’s a good place to stroll and browse the boutiques, while you may find vintage Airstream trailers in the grassy town square acting as a pop-up food court.

Apart from the usual watersports and beach fun, there’s the Grayton Beach State Park - a series of sand dunes, magnolia and pine woods - and the Eden Garden State Park a beautiful 19th-century estate house filled with antiques plus lovely gardens. Or you can just hire a bike and explore the area from the saddle on plenty of cycle routes.

Evenings are for beach strolls, sunsets and al fresco dining. To find your own bit of gorgeousness, use our guide to the best places to stay on Santa Rosa Beach
