Located on the popular yet largely unspoilt Mount Desert Island, in Maine, Southwest Harbor
is found on the quieter, less flashy, western side. Bar Harbor, on the eastern coast, is where
most visitors head. A small, tranquil town, it is nevertheless a big boat-building and fishing
centre. Also, choosing one of the best places to stay in Southwest Harbor, makes for a great
base for exploring the island’s Acadia National Park.
The vast 47,000-acre park is one of the big draws of the area - one of the country’s top ten
parks and most popular in summer and autumn - with its unspoilt forests, mountain streams,
rocky beaches and granite peaks - one of which, Cadillac Mountain, is the highest mountain
on the United States’ Atlantic Coast. Here there is hiking, cycling and horse-riding trails
and the chance to spot moose, bear, whales and seabirds.
First settled by fishermen, Southwest Harbor is still a big fishing community and has also
built up a healthy boat and yacht-building industry. Take a cruise out into Frenchman Bay to
the Cranberry Isles or hire a vessel for a fishing trip. Or just enjoy a stroll around the docks and
harbours to watch the maritime activity.
The town has a couple of unusual museums - bird carving and vintage automobiles - as well
as craft and art galleries. And, of course, plenty of restaurants serving up Maine lobster!
