 Mexico City and Environs Hotels
Mexico is so much more than tequila, fajitas and sombreros. With a diversity of landscapes, languages, cuisines and indigenous culture, its capital Mexico City, the second largest on earth, is also its vibrant, mad beating heart, with a wealth of historical sites and museums, fantastic restaurants and an exciting arts scene. Mexico City is surrounded by beautiful old towns like Puebla and great weekend retreats like Valle de Bravo, while in the south Chiapas is a lush rainforest state dotted with Mayan ruins and breathtaking scenery and the famous Yucatan peninsula offers picture-perfect beaches and world-class resorts for those in search of sun, sea and sand. The hotel scene was dominated until recently by the big chains in resorts like Cancun but the last ten years has seen a decided shift towards more sophisticated offerings with a handful of hoteliers dominating the design hotel market. Whether you choose to stay in a contemporary hotel, an exclusive beach resort or a small hotel with a cultural mission one thing is certain: this fascinating and generous country will not disappoint. The hotels are listed by price category and the order bears no relation to our preference.

| Luxury: Friendly and original spa hotel |
| Location: MEXICO CITY; in upmarket Polanco |
| For a big chain hotel the W Mexico City has a decidedly original and fun interior with richly coloured furnishings, innovative lighting and a huge water-filled pool in the lobby. Rooms come with round bathtubs and hammocks with vertiginous views of the city far below, there are three restaurants and a world-class spa to keep you busy and the service from its friendly young staff is impeccable. |

| Mid Price: Trendy city hotel in upmarket district |
| Location: MEXICO CITY; in exclusive Polanco surrounded by great shops and restaurants |
| Habita’s stark minimalism will not be to everyone’s taste but this is Mexico’s original design hotel and despite the white walls, raw concrete ceilings and acres of glass, the well-thought-out rooms feel like a home away from home. The rooftop pool area is still one of the city’s places to see and be seen on weekends with a DJ playing electronica and a trendy young crowd. |

| Mid Price: Great design in the coolest part of Mexico City |
| Location: MEXICO CITY; in the city's hippest district |
| Condesa DF’s huge wedge-shaped central atrium is bathed in light while bold graphics and accents in shades of green reflect the parks that surround it. You won’t want to leave your bedroom with its Ipod sound system, great music, dark wood floors and sexy shower room but try to make it up to the rooftop bar for sushi and cocktails surrounded by the city’s movers and shakers. |

| Mid Price: A taste of old Mexico or a cliche? |
| Location: MEXICO CITY; in upmarket Polanco, surrounded by modern high-rises |

| A taste of old Mexico or a cliché?....Casa Vieja is a matter of opinion. Themed rooms decorated in vibrant colours come with their own kitchenette and have all the amenities of a larger hotel. The pretty terrace overrun with bougainvillea is a charming spot in which to relax and the local ceramics, paintings and decorative elements throughout this little hotel only add to its charm and character. |

| Mid Price: Remote forest lodge |
| Location: VALLE DE BRAVO; in secluded forest outside town, about 60 miles W of Mexico City |
| Individual cabins full of dark wood and luxurious natural fabrics shelter under pines on a steep hillside that leads down to the main lodge and a tiny lake. The restaurant is all deep ruby reds and calf-skin cushions and this hotel proves that the great outdoors can also be stylish. Great for families they also organise quad-biking, zip-lining, kayaking and mountain biking in the local countryside. |

| Mid Price: Former water factory combining old with new |
| Location: PUELBA; about 68 miles from Mexico City, in heart of a former iindustrial area with ruins |
| A former 19th century water factory near the site of an old convent, this ultra-modern hotel is a symphony of old and new. Reclaimed timber sits alongside slick black stone, the original façade still bears the factory name and rooms have chunky glass balconies and wet rooms clad in local onyx. The restaurant serves exquisite contemporary Mexican cuisine and is a big draw for the local glitterati. |

| Mid Price: Boutique charm and hip living in this art-deco building |
| Location: MEXICO CITY; close to Parque Mexico in Condesa |
| New boutique hotel in an Art-deco apartment block in bohemian district Condesa. Chic and luxurious rooms have natural timber floors and furnishings, travertine-stone bathrooms, flatscreen TVs and iPod docks. The intimate restaurant serves contemporary Mexican fare such as salmon with chipotle miso and mandarin margheritas while the top-floor penthouse has a cleverly-hidden bedroom and a gorgeous round tub big enough for two. |
