Safari Lodges and Camps Hotels

Tanzania is justifiably famous for some of the greatest attractions in Africa. The north of the country is home to the short grass plains of the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and Mount Kilimanjaro, whilst the south of the country offers a more private and remote experience, famed for its very high standard of walking safaris. Offshore islands such as Zanzibar (see separate list) offer some of the most beautiful beaches and impressive diving the Indian Ocean can provide. All are easily accessible by small aircraft after a safari, making a perfect two-centre holiday. Whether you are a first time safari goer or a serious Africa buff, the best of the parks' lodges and camps will not disappoint. Here is the pick, to suit all budgets, chosen by experts of many years standing. The hotels are listed by price category, and their order bears no reflection on our preference.

PLEASE NOTE: IT'S DIFFICULT, AND UNUSUAL, TO BOOK THESE HOTELS DIRECT. OUR PREFERRED EXPERT TOUR OPERATOR IS THE EXCELLENT TANZANIA ODYSSEY (Tanzania Odyssey 020 7471 8780) WHO WILL TAKE CARE OF YOUR ENTIRE AFRICAN ADVENTURE. MENTION THE HOTEL GURU WHEN YOU CONTACT THEM, AND YOU WILL RECEIVE A 5% DISCOUNT.

Lake Manyara Tree Lodge, Lake Manyara National Park
Luxury:  Gorgeous timber suites near Lake Manyara
Location: Lake Manyara National Park
Hotel Hotel
Regarded by many as CC Africa's most beautiful lodge, the camp's ten luxurious safari tree house suites, crafted from local timber and makuti (palm fronds), are simply stunning. Discreetly tucked away in an ancient mahogany forest in close proximity to Lake Manyara. Tree Lodge offers some of the least crowded safari in the Northern Parks and certainly the best accommodation and experience at Manyara.
Ngorongoro Crater Lodge
Luxury:  One of the most exclusive and luxurious hotels in the world
Location: The Ngorongoro Conservation Area, 60 miles West of Arusha
Hotel Hotel
Voted year on year as one of the top ten hotels on the planet. Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is quite rightly the flagship property for the Conservation Corporation and one of the world's most unique hotels. The rooms and communal areas offer views directly down into an extinct volcano packed with the highest density of game in Africa. The sumptuous opulence and spoiling butler service will ensure you remember the crater for years to come.
Kleins Camp, Serengeti
Luxury:  Breathtaking views from this camp in hills just outside the Serengeti
Location: North East Serengeti
Hotel Hotel
Situated high on the Kuka Hills in a private concession just beyond the boundaries of the Serengeti, Kleins commands superb views over the plains extending up to Kenya. A further joy of Kleins Camps' location is that it is not bound by the rules of the Serengeti so the maximum of 16 guests at the camp can enjoy night drives and safaris in open-sided vehicles, and walk in the surrounding bush.
Beho Beho
Luxury:  Comfortable accommodation and first-rate food at this small privately owned camp
Location: Selous Game Reserve
Hotel Hotel
The beauty and variety of the landscape of Africa's largest wildlife park, and the accessability of the game combined with the intimacy and comfort of this small, privately owned camp, makes Beho Beho one of the continent's most memorable. Overlooking a river gorge, nine spacious, airy bandas provide extremely comfortable accomodation, with large bathrooms and open-air showers. The food, eaten communally, is excellent, and there's a small swimming pool.
Oliver's Camp, Tarangire
Mid Price:  Attractive tents and real safari are the highlights of staying here
Location: Tarangire National Park
Hotel Hotel
At the upper end of mid-price, Oliver's Camp features eight beautifully furnished tents set in a truly stunning area of Tarangire National Park. Specialising in walking safaris and fly camping within the park, (the only operators capable of doing this) Oliver's camp is all about real safari; guides here are some of the best to be found on the Northern Safari Circuit. Asburdly good for game in August, September and October this camp is a real little gem.
Mwagusi, Ruaha National Park
Mid Price:  Simple camp with character and homely charm
Location: North East of Ruaha National Park
Hotel Hotel
Located in the North of Ruaha National Park Mwagusi is a rare gem on the safari circuit. Tucked away on the banks of a curve in the Mwagusi Sand River and then home of Chris Fox and family, the camp oozes character and homely charm. Overall it's a little bit rough round the edges but that's the way it wants to be ... and we wouldn't want it any other way.
Selous Safari Camp, Selous Game Reserve
Mid Price:  Informal, attractive and good value, the best tented safari camp in the Selous
Location: Northern Selous Game Reserve
Hotel Hotel
Owned by the Selous Safari Company, the camp is located in the north of the superb Selous Game Reserve in Southern Tanzania. Recently renovated, to a very high standard, this is the best tented safari camp in the Selous and offers excellent value for money. Set on the banks of a lagoon the 12 rooms are stunning, the standard of guiding is excellent and the camp atmosphere relaxed and wonderfully comfortable.
Sayari Camp, Serengeti
Mid Price:  Gorgeous tented camp in a stunning location
Location: Northern Serengeti
Hotel Hotel
Sayari, which is Swahili for universe or planet, is a beautiful camp that arguably has the best location of any Serengeti Camp. Set in the far north of the park on the edge of the Mara River, this tented camp blends into a truly majestic landscape. This is the Serengeti of river crossings, copious big game and large prides. Most importantly though, it offers the best of the Serengeti, but in seclusion.
Ras Kutani, Mainland Coast
Inexpensive:  Alluring Polynesian style beach hideaway
Location: Mainland Coast, 25 miles from Dar
Hotel Hotel
At the upper end of the budget price range, Ras Kutani is a seductive Polynesian style beach hideaway sitting in a cushion of tropical forest on the banks of a wide freshwater lagoon and a deserted beach. The lodge has just 12 private, well spaced bandas stretching from a fragrant hillside of a tropical forest to the powder-soft beach below. A very fine beach hideaway: cards, chess and backgammon are about as stressful as this place gets.
