Cumbria Hotels

The Lake District is the best known part of the county of Cumbria. But there is more to Cumbria than the Lake District.

Cumbria is a land of beauty and variety, from its busy cities and historic market towns to its stone and slate villages, each possessing their own character. Cumbria's landscape is diverse. Wild fells and high passes with endless views stir the imagination. Quiet pastoral countryside and valleys enchant. Rivers twist and tumble. Glacial lakes reflect cloud-topped mountains. Man-made drystone walls march across the dales. Woodlands and coastal scenery add to the mix.

The legacy of the past is here in prehistoric and Roman remains. Stone circles and burial cairns dot the land. Old Roman roads and forts still command attention. Historic places of worship and ruined castles speak of Norman times. Country houses and gardens delight the visitor.

Walkers call this county 'paradise'. Everywhere the grandeur of the scenery speaks to the glory of Cumbria. Its best hotels reflect its atmosphere and rugged surroundings. A warm welcome, good food and a comfortable bed are at their heart. The hotels are listed by price category, and their order bears no reflection on our preference. Reviews by Fiona Duncan

Augill Castle
Mid Price:  Eclectic family home in lovely countryside
Location: Kirkby Stephen; off the A685 between Kirkby Stephen and Brough
Hotel Hotel
Stunningly set in the Eden Valley, this eccentric mid-Victorian-folly-castle is equidistant between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales and makes a refreshingly different base. Owners Simon and Wendy Bennett are warms hosts in an eclectic home stuffed with antiques and curios, four posters and roll top baths. Dinner (on request) is communal, around a huge oak table and breakfast is a leisurely affair. Children and dogs welcomed.
Hipping Hall Hotel

The food and the service are what stand out at this sassy restaurant-with-rooms, a small country hotel that underwent a complete transformation under its new owners, with former young chef of the year Jason Birkbeck in the kitchen. The restaurant, where Jason serves inspired, memorable dishes, is set in the Great Hall, with minstrels' gallery, and there are also six cool white bedrooms in the house, and three cottage ones across the courtyard.
