Safari Camps and Lodges Hotels

Undisputed home of the walking safari and well regarded as offering the best guides on the continent, Zambia is a safari country adored by connoisseurs. Tourist numbers are the lowest of all the Big Game destinations but for those wanting to stay away from the crowds this destination simply cannot be beaten. South Luangwa, the leopard capital of Africa and Zambia's prime park is home to the continent's most authentic bush camps and exceptional walking. The Lower Zambezi, one of Africa's most beautiful parks, offers night safari, walking, boating and some of the best tiger fish fishing in the world....the diversity of activities is superb. Couple this with the Busanga Plains in Northern Kafue or a couple of days at Victoria Falls and you have an outstanding holiday. The hotels are listed by price category, and the order bears no reflection on our preference.

PLEASE NOTE: IT'S DIFFICULT, AND UNUSUAL, TO BOOK THESE HOTELS DIRECT. OUR PREFERRED EXPERT TOUR OPERATOR IS THE EXCELLENT ZAMBIA ODYSSEY (Zambia Odyssey 020 7471 8780) WHO WILL TAKE CARE OF YOUR ENTIRE AFRICAN ADVENTURE. With only six rooms (designed as 'bedouin style' tents) complete with outdoor bathrooms, the camp is small and intimate. High standards of luxury and service are offered, excellent cuisine and to top it all a large range of game viewing activities, walking safaris, canoeing, birding, boating and fishing.
Luangwa Safari House
Luxury:  Stunning private house with a unique style
Location: South Luangwa National Park
Hotel Hotel
Built on the edge of a seasonal lagoon in South Luangwa and with a backdrop of the Chindeni Hills, Luangwa House is the finest private house in Luangwa. You enter through massive wooden doors into a huge main room with views through the front of the house which is completely open. Each of the four bedrooms (sleeps 8) is uniquely and individually styled. Upstairs rooms have a suspended balcony with glorious views over the bush. A somewhat whacky but wonderfully designed property.
Tafika Camp
Luxury:  Relaxed, friendly, family bush camp
Location: South Luangwa National Park
Hotel Hotel
Tafika Camp is run by its owners John and Carol Coppinger and it offers some of the best guiding to be found in Africa; and certainly in the Luangwa valley. With only six rooms made from reed and thatch (complete with open air showers and solar-powered lanterns) the camp epitomises what the Luangwa is fabulous for: small, intimate bush camps focused on walking safari. The owner takes clients microlighting meaning Tafika can offer a view of Luangwa no one else can!
Busanga Bush Camp
Mid Price:  Remote bush camp for keen game watchers
Location: Kafue National Park; Busanga Plains
Hotel Hotel
Located in the far north of Kafue National Park, this is a stunning bush camp: simple but comfortable. With only three rooms (or four for group bookings) built of reed and canvas, Busanga is all about safari - pure and unadulterated. Discreetly hidden from view, it is set on an island overlooking the Busanga Plains, an expanse of seasonal floodplains that play host to some of the remotest game to be viewed - particularly lion - in Africa.
Old Mondoro
Mid Price:  A back to basics, authentic bush camp
Location: Lower Zambezi National Park
Hotel Hotel
Nestled among giant winterthorn trees on the banks of the Zambezi, Old Mondoro overlooks a maze of scenic channels and islands. It aims to give its maximum of eight guests a true safari and bush experience by bringing them closer to the natural world.
Luwi Bushcamp
Mid Price:  Rustic bushcamp perfect for walking safaris
Location: South Luangwa National Park
Hotel Hotel
Focused solely on walking safaris, this is a rustic bushcamp that epitomizes the legacy of the conservationist, Norman Carr and is an experience that every true safari enthusiast would relish. Luwi lies beneath a shady canopy of mahogany trees overlooking a grass plain that is regularly used as a crossing path by game moving toward the lagoon just off to the camp's side. With only four rooms the camp is minimal but has undeniable charm and character; the guiding is some of the best around.
Nsefu
Mid Price:  Offers game viewing on your doorstep
Location: South Luangwa National Park
Hotel Hotel
Located on a wide bend in the Luangwa river, Nsefu remains much the same as the old 'hunting lodge' it was set up as so long ago. Each room is a thatched rondavel with ensuite bathrooms and good views over the river and a terraced area with game grazing. The bar area, hidden beside a huge extinct termite mound, overlooks a waterhole where game, especially leopard, can be seen at night. Excellent guiding on walks, with day and night drives on offer, as in all Robin Pope camps – of which this is one.
Shiwa Ngandu 'Africa House'
Mid Price:  A reminder of a bygone colonial era
Location: North Luangwa
Hotel Hotel
This remarkable house and estate of Sir Stewart Gore-Brown, located at the heart of Northern Zambia has recently been brought back from the brink of collapse by his great grandson. Today Africa House overlooking Shiwa Ngandu (Lake of the Royal Crocodiles) is a reminder of the grandeur and splendour of a bygone colonial era. The Estate boasts a 10,000 hectare game ranch rich in wildlife. A stay here might also involve meeting the people on the estate, visiting schools and other ongoing projects. Seemingly out of place in such a raw country, 'Africa House' is unique.
Lufupa Camp
Inexpensive:  Canvas tents in a wild location
Location: Kafue National Park
Hotel Hotel
Lufupa Camp is located just south of the Busanga Plains on the confluence of the Lufupa and Kafue rivers. The area and the camp's location is pretty much as wild as you can get and albeit fairly basic compared with other lodges in the park, Lufupa has an hypnotic energy. Accommodation is in ten canvas Meru tents - the best value property in Zambia!
