Although the small fishing village of St-Tropez was quietly attracting fashionistas as long ago as the 1920s, it was in the '50s, when Brigitte Bardot came here to film Roger Vadim's 'And God created woman', that it really hit the headlines. Now a byword for glamour, the town is the retreat of the glitterati, with their yachts, their cars (summer traffic jams are legendary) and their wallets. A naturally beautiful place, with cobblestoned streets and stunning views of sea and mountains, it has some 40 beaches to choose from and a clutch of pretty, unspoilt neighbouring villages to visit. Shops, restaurants and hotels are the last word in chic, but you can stay here without breaking the bank. Curious? We will point you in the right direction. The order by which the hotels are listed bears no reflection on our preference.
