The Abbey West Cornwall

“Jean Shrimpton's charming, characterful hotel in the heart of old Penzance, with an eclectic mix of art and antiques.”

“One of our long-time favourite hotels, this delightful sky-blue house makes a perfect base for exploring south Cornwall or setting off for the Isles of Scilly. Still run by 'The Shrimp' ('60s iconic model, Jean Shrimpton) and Michael Cox, together with their son Thaddeus and a small team, it's a marvellous antidote to bland contemporary style with its eclectic, ravishingly pretty mix of paintings, antiques and objects d'art, all in a characterful 1660 house. No restaurant, but plenty around, including The Slipway next door. Highly recommended.”

They say

“Why do people love staying in your hotel?
Often people tell us they love the ambience and how when they stay with us it feels more like staying with a friend rather than in a hotel. The warmness of staff and unique period features such as antique furniture, open fires a private walled garden and Brian’s homemade cakes all add to the experience.

What is there to do in the area or on site?
We provide a perfect base for exploring the local delights of West Penwith such as the picturesque fishing hamlet of Mousehole, the stunning Minnack, an open air theatre cut into the cliff face and the historic St Michael’s Mount, an ancient castle that sits on an Island overlooking Mount’s Bay.

What kind of breakfast do you offer?
Our breakfasts are all cooked to order and we are very proud of the quality of our locally sourced ingredients. Highlights include freshly squeezed orange juice, oven baked croissants, local yogurt, milk and eggs together with award winning sausages and bacon from our local butcher. We also offer Newlyn Smoked Haddock and Kippers as well as our famous scrambled eggs and smoked salmon.

Do you offer other meals? And can you recommend good places to eat out locally?
Visitors can find many excellent places to eat all within a short distance from the hotel. Of course because of our location you can expect award-winning fish in particular from Michelin Starred Chef Ben Tunnicliffe a short distance away in Newlyn.

Which are your most popular room types, and why?
Rooms 1, 3 and The Suite are the most popular as they are spacious, lavishly furnished and have stunning views looking across Mount’s Bay and at St Michael’s Mount.

What message would you like to give Hotel Guru readers?
That we would be delighted and honoured if they choose us for a trip to Cornwall and hope that we could fulfil everything they would need to insure they have a wonderful holiday.”
