It’s hard to imagine closer attention to detail in the seven delightful bedrooms, full of fresh flowers from the lovely garden, pretty fabrics and delicate ornaments, of this four-century old house where malt for the village ale was stored. Judi Wilkes is a superb hostess, warm and professional, and her breakfasts (no dinner but excellent gastropubs nearby) are second to none. A treat.

THEY SAY: This delightful Cotswold bed and breakfast is a 20-minute stroll away from the architecturally sublime market town of Chipping Campden with its 17th-century market hall as well as restaurants, pubs and shops. This elegant and recently refurbished seven-bedroom country guest house in Gloucestershire promises relaxation, comfortable deep sofas, and roaring fires. Its focus is the great croquet lawn whose far edge ramps down to a half hidden brook and rises up the far hill as a newly planted orchard. During warm spring days, the summerhouse terrace is the place for home-made biscuits and tea. It’s also a place to watch croquet and quoits - and sip a long drink before supper. Beyond a sheltering wisteria-draped wall is the working kitchen garden and fruit orchard. Off to the right, broad steps lead on to a lush border and a romantically-placed seat. In winter the garden is friendly. In spring, summer and autumn it’s glorious. In a really old house no room is ever the same. Over the years the Malt House rooms have evolved: an antique table here, a restored cedar wardrobe there; maybe a four-poster in that room, fine Royal Worcester china in another. And everywhere fresh flowers from the garden; soft towels and fragrant oils in the en suite bathrooms. The six bedrooms and one Garden Suite are decorated in fresh colours and classically elegant fabrics. Three rooms have their own entrances directly from the garden. Some rooms have extra beds and there is great flexibility for all types of accommodation requirements. Then breakfast: strong fresh coffee, home-grown rhubarb, freshly squeezed orange juice, berries in season from the kitchen garden, home-made breads, granola and muesli, fresh Cotswold eggs and bacon. A fine breakfast from one of the finest bed and breakfasts in Chipping Campden.
