Tucked into the Welsh Marches, by an old stone bridge on the river Monnow in an unchanged village, the Bell is a former 17th-century inn where contemporary and cosy now happily coincide. There are wonderful walks from the door, a Jersey cream tea on your return, excellent food and wine in the flag-stoned, candlelit dining room and eight adorable simple-sophisticated bedrooms. A marvellous place.

THEY SAY: Situated in the some of the most beautiful and unspoiled Monmouthshire countryside, this former 17th century Welsh Coaching Inn, overlooks the Monnow River and one of the Marches castles, Skenfrith, an important Norman stronghold during the 13th century cross-border skirmishes. The restaurant at The Bell at Skenfrith has won many awards for its food, including 2 AA Rosettes. The full a la carte menu changes regularly and offers locally sourced seasonal food. Prices range from £20 a head for a three-course lunch and £30 a head for a three-course dinner. On Sundays, there is a set lunch menu and a la carte in the evening. Special dietary requirements can normally always be met and we offer a special menu for children with meals from the organic food specialist 'Miniscoff'. Children are most welcome (although we regret that under 8s are not allowed in the restaurant in the evenings) and we are more than happy to arrange special meals. In good weather, guests can eat outside on the garden terrace. Private parties are most welcome by prior arrangement and we recommend booking for all occasions to avoid disappointment. The Bell has eight guestrooms individually decorated with luxury and comfort foremost in mind. Most rooms have a bespoke double bed with finest linen, down duvets and traditional pure wool Welsh blankets. Every room has a bathroom en-suite with complimentary Cath Collins bathroom toiletries. All rooms are equipped with a CD/DVD player, direct dial telephone, internet connection and a view of the Welsh hills and/or River Monnow.
