“If ‘Granny chic’ is now an acceptable term, Asti Guesthouse certainly epitomises it. At only 20 euro per person per night, it is the perfect place for single travellers or those on a very tight budget. 80-year-old Annie is a spectacular host and you only have to look at her guestbook, bulging with heart-felt comments, to see that this place has charm and character, not least Annie herself. There are quirky touches to this 350-year-old converted monastery such as the vaulted ceiling, complete with chandelier; amber glass cup and saucers in the unintentionally kitsch breakfast room where Annie serves a basic breakfast, and while the bathrooms are shared, they are spotlessly clean as are the rooms. With only eight large bedrooms, you’re unlikely to have to fight for a bathroom spot, but Asti does get booked up in advance due to Annie’s popularity and the superb location in the heart of Valletta. You will have to book by phone, however, as Annie doesn’t do computers.”
