Ayasofya Konaklari Istanbul (Sultanahmet), Turkey

“A collection of historic buildings, reminiscent of the city’s Ottoman past, converted to a stylish hotel next door to Aya Sofya. Picturesque painted wooden houses each with 10 en-suite rooms and apartments in Ottoman style - maroon velvet, gilt and ornate furniture. A lovely garden terrace bar. ”

“This is the place which kick-started the Istanbul boutique hotel renaissance and can claim credit for rescuing the last of Sultanahmet’s ramshackle, picturesque wooden houses from demolition. Ramshackle no longer, nine prettily painted Ottoman houses stand literally in the shadow of Aya Sofya (go for a room facing the narrow, cobbled street for a view of the great 6th-century cathedral). Each has up to 10 en-suite rooms and apartments, all decorated in the 19th-century Ottoman style, which leans towards plush maroon velvet, gilt and ornate wooden furniture. The beds, happily, are comfortably modern, but since these are heritage buildings, guests have to accept some compromises in terms of design and facilities.”

"Romance and history seep through the walls of the Ayasofya Konaklari that line pedestrianised Soğukçesme Sokaği, the road between the grounds of the Hagia Sophia and the wall of Topkapi Palace. "
