Gorgeous: an austere 17th-century palace that mixes the old with the avant-garde to great effect. Sensuality is the theme: crushed velvets, vibrant silks, silver and gold leaf are teamed with rustic furniture, power showers and plasma screen TVs. You can indulge in a massage in your bedroom, sunbathe in the solarium or watch life drift by from the roof terrace.

Key Attractions: romantic, boutique, stylish, city
Price Bracket: Luxury
In a Nutshell: 17th century meets the 21st in this magnificent old palace
Location: in the heart of the Barri Gotic
Address: Hotel Neri, Spain

They Say:
The location of the Neri H & R has been important in defining its decoration. The Gothic is a built up quarter, which is why an airy and spacious hotel has been intended. Guests will be immediately comfortable in all its rooms, but at the same time will be surprised by its anti-conventional decoration and by the magic of every corner.

The Neri H & R is situated in a small XVIII palace, which has been totally restored and refurbished with total respect for the features of a building from that period. This hotel and restaurant has 22 select rooms and a carefully chosen menu. It also has a lounge library and a solarium terrace looking over the cathedral and the roofs of the gothic quarter.

It has just two suites (one of which was occupied by John Malkovich for a month while his play Hysteria was done at a local theater), for those who need more space. Space is of the essence in the cramped Barri Gòtic and the Neri has the added advantage of a terrace for coffee and cocktails on the plaza and a rooftop garden overgrown with jasmine plants and creepers. It's a shame they've felt the need to cram in sun loungers and it can feel a bit like a public pool when the place is busy. The somewhat overpriced gourmet "new Catalan cuisine" restaurant here is a further boon to followers of the super chef Ferran Adrià.
