“Formerly the private home and illustrious garden of renowned horticulturalist Rosemary Verey, Barnsley House became a hotel in 2003, the darling of the bonus crowd, its padded red leather bar mere moments from London once you were at the wheel of your trusty Porsche. Happily, the lovely mellow house and still stunningly beautiful garden have since fallen into more measured and caring hands and Barnsley House is now the sister hotel to Calcot Manor (and to the Village Inn, a smart pub with rooms almost opposite). The padded leather has gone, the decoration now more sympathetic to its surroundings, and the lovely, all white, cleverly mirrored dining room leads to what must be one of the prettiest hotel terraces anywhere, with tables shaded by parasols facing the famous garden. There’s also a lovely yet low key spa, tucked away along a shady path. ”
