Castle Bera Rajasthan (Pali), India

“A heritage homestay in a ramshackle castle in the Aravalli Hills, one of the best places in India to spot leopard. Only a few hours’ drive from Jodhpur, yet feels marvellously remote.”

“This dilapidated, 300-year-old fortress belongs to descendants of the maharajas of Udaipur. Built by the great warrior, Maharana Pratap, it’s still run by his ancestors, uncle-and-nephew duo Thakur Baljeet Singh and Shatrunjay Pratap. This is a ‘heritage homestay’ and you’re very much treated as a guest in their home. After dark, the staff – from the Rabari tribe – serve you G&Ts on the lawn, followed by dinner altogether in the dining room. The seven guest rooms (only four are ever in use at once) are full of faded photographs of royalty, polo matches and weddings. They feel a little tired (old stone floors, cracked walls, faded frescoes) but cosy (warm quilts, rugs and a candle by the bed). The newer wing has two bedrooms and a drawing room, making it ideal for four friends. Quirky details include a glass cabinet filled with miniature bottles (Baljeet’s aunt’s collection) and a gym with an old-school running machine and walls covered with Thacker’s war maps. Most guests come here to spot the elusive leopard – the arid, rocky landscape around Bera is perfect for big cats and outstanding tracker and photographer, Gaffar Khan, will take you out on exhilarating safaris.”
