“Delightfully informal boutique B&B near the River Dart. 'Quintessentially English' - this 17th Century house is full to the rafters with art and antiques and home to a fine lawn, an indoor pool, gym and grass tennis. Whether rooms or self-catering, the homely vibe is throughout. A magical spot!”

Hotel Overview

“An old farmhouse, restored by Richard Johnson 30 years ago, near the beautiful river Dart. Inside, no reception but a pub-style bar, informal sitting room and panelled dining room where guests eat together or separately as they wish. Excellent French-inspired cooking; breakfast ‘any time after nine’. It's run on house party lines where guests (children and dogs welcome) relax and have fun the Fingals way. Self catering accommodation also available. Fingals can be rented on an exclusive basis, up to 30 people, catered or self catered”

See What They Say

“Why do people love staying in your hotel?
Because they know they can truly relax without worrying about stuffy staff hovering over them. Basically our motto at Fingals has always remained the same from day one... Fingals should be unique, sociable, enjoyable, personal and easy-going so that guests feel entirely 'at home'.
We hope anyone willing to allow themselves to enter into our world will come away with enthusiastic memories. House parties, wedding receptions, romantic weekends away, family holidays, everyone is welcome. Fingals is simply a very special place to stay - it is a true indulgence.

What is there to do in the area or on site?
Fingals offers a swimming pool surrounded by luscious flowering plants with a sauna overlooking the stream, a gym, games room, plenty of places to sit and relax with a good book plus a croquet lawn and a splendid grass tennis court. There are beautiful lanes and coast paths to explore and the river to play in or on - boats to be hired include dinghies, canoes, ferries and a paddle steamer. There are also two steam trains and beautiful National Trust houses close to us for exploring.

What kind of breakfast do you offer?
The Very Best! Freshly squeezed orange juice alongside other local fruit juices. Fresh coffee and a variety of teas. Freshly baked croissants, local jams, marmalade and honey then a Full English using locally sourced bacon, sausages and eggs. This is a leisurely meal, served at any time between 9 and 11 am although we will cook earlier if required!

Do you offer other meals? And can you recommend good places to eat out locally?
We cook dinner in the evenings twice a week – a delicious 3 course meal for adults which can be eaten at a long communal table so that you get to meet all sorts of interesting people or at an intimate table if you prefer. An example of the menu might be Green pepper soup/Diver scallops seared on a bed of salad and pancetta/Mussels with a saffron sauce/Smoked salmon blinis/Globe artichoke with melted butter or vinaigrette. Salmon & Turbot with samphire & beurre blanc sauce/Best End of Devon Lamb/ Duck Breast with a Confit of Leg., served with local seasonal vegetables. A selection of puddings or cheeseboard with tea or coffee and mints. On the evenings when the restaurant is open children are offered a high tea which might be lasagne, fish cakes or roast chicken.
We will happily recommend and book any of our wonderful local pubs or restaurants on the nights that guests are eating out.

Which are your most popular room types, and why?
Our rooms all differ in style and design but are equally comfortable.

What message would you like to give Hotel Guru readers?
We would like to invite Hotel Guru readers to visit Fingals to enjoy their own country house experience. A Hotel where they will not be judged and where they and their children can relax, make friends and enjoy the beautiful grounds and countryside of South Devon.”
