Hotel Review

Where do you start with Hermitage Bay? There is so much to wax lyrical about that it's hard to know where to begin. Stunning location on an idyllic white sand beach? Tick. Beautiful luxury accommodation? Tick. Wonderful staff who are happy to go above and beyond to ensure your stay is as perfect as it can be? Tick. Superb food and wine? Tick....The list just goes on! A stay at Hermitage Bay is restorative. Here it is all about complete peace, quiet and relaxation - though that doesn't mean that there's not a party atmosphere at night when the cocktails start flowing (you have to try the Planters Punch and their Mojitos). Accommodation is in 30 individual suites - either choose a beach or garden villa or opt for one on the hillside with its own private plunge pool. The architecture is charming - rustic style cabins (built from a variety of woods from sustainable forests in Guyana) dot the hillside and almost vanish amidst the blanket of greenery created by the stunning tropical gardens. Interiors do not disappoint either. You'll find huge comfy, muslin-draped beds, vast bathrooms with the biggest bath you're likely to clap eyes on, and of course the outside monsoon shower for those who like to commune with nature during their cleansing routines. The food here is fantastic. There is a large organic garden (get Fabian to give you a tour) which supplies the kitchen with many of the ingredients (the rest are sourced as locally as possible) and there is a daily changing menu on offer at both lunch and dinner. This is an all inclusive experience unlike any other. Unadulterated luxury at its finest. It may be expensive, but it's worth every penny....I'll be back!

Everything but the girl

The newest and loveliest addition to the island's hotels, all-inclusive or not, is Hermitage Bay, named after the supremely secluded crescent beach, above which rises a steep verdant hillside dotted with 17 handsome wooden cottages, each with a plunge pool. There are a further eight cottages close to the sand; they are smaller and lack plunge pools but have other advantages, not least their location. All have modish minimalist interiors, shaded verandahs and silvery wallaba-shingle hip roofs just like the ones in nearby Nelson's Dockyard, the exquisite Georgian settlement built by the British navy in the 18th century.

Hermitage Bay, Antigua: Hotel watch

The 25 cottage suites are vast, strung out across a (slightly bare) hillside which is slowly being given over to tropical greenery. Those on the hill (as opposed to those built by the beach) have incredible views, as well as private plunge pools and verandas. Décor is a mixture of Asian and plantation house: dark-wood floors, open-air showers, white linen and wooden shutters which open up one side of the room.
