“Changes have been afoot at this lovely old Georgian coaching inn where Guy Fawkes, when butler at adjacent Cowdray Castle, used to drink. The ground floor is now truncated and includes a bar area for drinks, coffees and snacks and, rather surprisingly, a restaurant serving the finest Argentinian steaks, headed by chef Richard Cook. The bedrooms here are the real joy, and include such delights as Goodwood, with its dashing flowery headboard and Singleton with its splashes of pink. Also notable is Jostling, a joyful superior room with a view of the castle and light flooding in from windows on two sides. The Angel is now managed by Richard Macadam, formerly of the excellent but now sadly closed West Stoke House.”
