“This bastion of Britishness has been recently satisfactorily revamped without losing its impeccable service. The magnificent mahogany staircase sweeps up to lighter and sexier rooms and dazzling white marble bathrooms with Art Deco chrome livery. There’s a curving new conservatory for breakfast and tea while the two new bars are filled at night with the chattering classes – very different from the crusty cigar smoke-filled boltholes of old. The subtly modernised restaurant is now in the hands of imaginative French chef Helene Darroze.”
