The Drawing Room Builth Wells (Twixt Cwmbach and Newbridge-on-Wye)

“A charming 18th Century Georgian house, nestled in the breathtaking Welsh countryside. Classic rooms offer understated elegance, comfort and peace. The award winning restaurant is the beating heart of this hotel. Spectacular rambling opportunities at this rural retreat. ”

“One of Wales's growing group of exceptional restaurants- with-rooms, where commitment and attention to detail are second-to-none. Here, Colin and Melanie Dawson have converted a Georgian house into a small restaurant, two sitting rooms and three guest bedrooms, all contemporary in style. Both are chefs, and their food wins many plaudits.”

They say

“Why do people love staying in your hotel?
People love to stay with us mainly because of the food, ambience and service.

What is there to do in the area?
We are close to Elan Valley - a "hidden secret" for stunning walking - guests always return blown away with its beauty. Hay-on-Wye, famous for its annual literary festival, is about 35 minutes drive away and is brilliant for half a day's browsing. It also has really good walks - the famous Offa's Dyke runs by the Wye in town and there is Hay Bluff for serious hiking.

What kind of breakfast do you offer?
Breakfast is all locally sourced. In addition to the usual full 'Welsh' we offer dishes like: Welsh Rarebit with Smoked Bacon & Tomato, Saute of Wild Mushrooms with Duck Egg and Scrambled Eggs with Smoked Salmon. There is also home made Muesli and sometimes Granola.

Do you offer other meals? And can you recommend good places to eat out locally?
We offer a set three course dinner included in the room price. Daily changing menus are prepared depending on seasonally available produce and what is good that day! We also take into account guests' food likes or dislikes.

Which are your most popular room types, and why?
The most popular room is 'Oliver', the red one. Probably because it seems the most romantic. It is the largest room has a king-size bed and lovely double bath overlooking the countryside.

What message would you like to give Hotel Guru readers?
We are unique. We are a licensed 'restaurant with rooms' offering luxury rooms and award winning gourmet cuisine without the formality of a hotel-type set up.”
