Hotel Review

Beatrice and Daniel Rogger became new owner-managers of this historic mansion (built for the 5th Duke of Argyll in 1780) in 2021. They have brought Swiss professionalism to the hotel - everything from the bar and restaurant to bedrooms ticks like a precision-made watch. That alone makes The Manor House stand out in Oban, a transit town replete with unprepossessing B&Bs but a little short of places to spend more than one night before catching a ferry to Mull, Islay or Jura or heading on by road or rail to Fort William or Loch Ness. But stay a little longer to relish Isle of Mull scallops, wild partridge, or local venison in the restaurant, alongside a reasonably priced wine list, and sip a local malt whisky in the cosy bar. Beatrice and Daniel have replaced some slightly dated furniture in some bedrooms, and plan to refresh others, but only the most finicky guest could take exception to the way they are now. Behind the hotel, a well-kept lawn overlooks the harbour – on a summer day, it's a perfect place to watch ferries and trawlers come and go, and sunsets are awesome all year round. Nearby sights and visitor experiences on the doorstep include McCaig's Tower (Oban's magnificent Victorian folly), the historic Oban Distillery, and Dunstaffnage Castle, and the hotel is an ideal base too for day trips and wildlife cruises to the isles of Mull and Staffa. Oban's harbour, Ferry Terminal and railway station are less than 10 minutes walk from the front door.
