“The Salutation really is the ultimate B&B. If you want luxury hotel comfort, without having to share it with several hundred others, this is your place. Tucked away in the glorious town of Sandwich, The Salutation advertises itself as having a delightful open garden inspired by Gertrude Jekyll, with a deliciously tempting tea room and gift shop. It is in fact the well-proportioned Lutyens house, with its surrounding accommodation, that holds the key to The Salutation’s best-kept secret – the rooms. Welcomed on arrival by the charming Dominic Parker, you will be shown to either The Gardener’s Cottage, The Coach House or Knightrider House, all impeccably decorated by the lady of the house, right down to the Penhaligon toiletries and Mulberry candles (the free mini-bar is Dominic’s touch). It’s plush, not too twee and incredibly comfortable; you can have the whole place to yourself (very popular with golfers during The Open and super celebrities) or you can choose to take a room and share the rest of the living accommodation with other guests. Breakfast is held in the grand Lutyens house, with a long dining table and silverware as standard – you can’t help but feel you’re in your own little period drama.”
