Photo of The Swan Inn

“The legendary Mitford sisters grew up in the quintessentially English village of Swinbrook and to this day the Swan is owned by the last surviving sister, Debo, Dowager Duchess of Devonshire. While family photographs still adorn the wall, the inn is today run by Archie and Nicola Orr-Ewing (see King’s Head, Bledington). Bedrooms in a converted Cotswold barn, individually designed by Nicola, compliment the excellent food and the loveliness of the riverside location. Why did the Dowager Duchess choose the Orr-Ewings as landlords? “I think it’s because we keep chickens”, says Archie. Don't expect perfection – things can be a bit hit or miss – but do expect a great ambience.”

They say

“Hidden in the Windrush Valley is the idyllic village of Swinbrook which appears not to have changed for centuries. Enchantingly lost in time.

Attractions include rolling hills near Burford that invite picturesque walks, cosy log fires, real ales, fine wines, delicious award-winning food and now our beautiful, recently decorated bedrooms - all great reasons to come and stay in this lovely pub, owned by the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire and run by Archie and Nicola Orr-Ewing.

You really could not dream up a more delightful English country pub (except for The King’s Head Inn, Bledington). With the Windrush running through it, and the most picturesque of Cotswold cricket pitches right by it, you could not find a more genuine and tranquil location.”
