Hotel Review

In a plum position on Hadrian’s Wall, this attractive Georgian house has enviable views over the Tyne Valley on one side, and into Northumberland on the other. Deceptively large, the inside is revealed as a series of comfortable rooms - vast hall, drawing room, dining room, private snug - that enjoy the views through large sash and bay-windows. The style is contemporary: plaid carpets and armchairs, deep sofas, coffee-and-cream colours, and bright, Arcadian-print wallpapers with plenty of stags’ heads and hunting scenes dotted around the walls. The bedrooms have a similarly fresh look with light colours, soft carpets, rich curtains and wallpapers, and a mix of hand-painted and faux-Georgian furnishings. The feel is comfortably traditional but not stuffy. Most bathrooms have free-standing baths. Food is one of the highlights with the kitchen turning out traditional dishes with a modern twist and with everything made from scratch - including bread and croissants - and a determined local sourcing. Spend your days pottering around the nearby Roman sites, walking a part of Hadrian’s Wall long-distance path, exploring Hexham Abbey or the chi-chi shops of Corbridge. Come back to a swim-with-a-view - the pool is in a glass-sided pavilion - or an indulgent spa treatment, followed by an indulgent afternoon tea on the terrace. All the ingredients for a great weekend break.

Walwick Hall

'A small, Georgian mansion in an enviable position close to Hadrian’s Wall with light, country-house-style interiors – comfortable rather than cluttered – and smart cooking. There’s a small spa and pool in a clever, glass-walled pavilion.'
