About Yangon

Myanmar’s largest and most vibrant city, Yangon — previously Rangoon — was the country’s capital until 2005. The natural starting point for almost all travellers to Myanmar, it’s also a fascinating destination — do take the time to spend a few days exploring its lively markets, roadside eateries and striking architectural marvels if you can. A small selection of excellent accommodation options await, catering to a range of tastes and budgets. Swish new city hotels have emerged in recent years, but many of the best places to stay in Yangon are the grand 19th and 20th-century stalwarts, still oozing classic charm.

An intriguing cultural melting pot, Yangon fuses elements of Burmese, Chinese, Indian and British design in its eclectic architecture. The imposing Shwedagon Pagoda, the city’s most famous landmark, is a glittering Buddhist temple topped with a gold leaf-clad dome. Join pilgrims in admiring the temple's sacred relics in the early morning, or spot the stupa glimmering from rooftop bars or hotel balconies at night. Chaukhtatgyi Paya and Ngahtatgyi Paya, both enormous carved Buddhas, are also impressive — as is the gilded Botataung Paya, home to hundreds of turtles. For a further insight into Myanmar's history, visit the National Musem or the Taukkyan War Cemetery.

The bustling Bogyoke Aung San Market, the largest in the city, is fantastic; pick up spun silk, paintings, spices and snacks at some of the 2000 stalls whilst you wander. Keen amblers will also appreciate the peaceful paths of Kandawgyi Lake and Yangon’s many beautiful parks. Return to one of the best places to stay in Yangon for indulgent afternoon teas, restful massages or refreshing pool swims before you head out for the evening.
