Hotel Review

A recent addition to the Comporta area, where white sand beaches are washed by turquoise waters, Quinta da Comporta sits at the edge of a large rice field, offering a shifting colour palette throughout the year. A beautiful swimming pool, with clear glass sides, runs between the restaurant and the spa, both of which come with high, cathedral-like, wooden roofs. In an old rice storage barn, complete with traditional blue painted trim, rooms are housed under an industrial terracotta tiled roof with breezy, chic interiors; think wooden floors and beamed wooden ceilings with bamboo details and locally woven flat baskets decorating the walls. Four villas, with private pools, come in typical Comporta style with thatch roofs and walls of reeds and wood.

The spa, an important element of the whole, is huge, with glass walls overlooking the rice fields and flickering fires for cooler evenings. Treatments use a new beauty line launched by Câncio Martins, Oryza’Lab, which draws on the benefits of natural, organic rice.

Food is delicious and draws on locally sourced ingredients to deliver dishes which please an international crowd. Try the octopus carpaccio or monkfish medallions with creamy rice, prawns, algae and fennel, the seafood ceviche or red quinoa salad with main courses of grilled scarlet shrimps. A bio-garden is in the making which will provide the kitchen with seasonal produce.
