“This contemporary-style country house hotel, with a small spa, sits in a secluded wooded valley yet is only 10 minutes from the beach near Whitby. Light-filled interiors are smart but unfussy, while the restaurant serves creative menus and much of the produce is sourced from the kitchen garden.”

Hotel Review

Tucked down a private drive in a wooded ravine, Raithwaite feels deep in the country yet is only a 10-minute walk from the beach between Whitby and Sandsend. Not surprisingly, it’s a favourite with dog-owners – plenty of ground-floor bedrooms with patios – and those who want a seaside break but without the brashness of a seaside resort.

The hotel has a surprisingly modern look as the original Victorian hall is all but hidden by a 21 st -century L-shaped stone extension, albeit built in traditional style. There are a couple of brick-built additions, one a faux-battlemented affair which sits rather oddly, but is popular with families.

Interiors throughout are light and contemporary with oak floors, pale-coloured walls and smart leather and wool-upholstered furniture. Original modern art, mainly of local landscapes, adds bright splashes of colour. Bedrooms are low-key contemporary, most with views over the surrounding gardens and woodland – some 85 acres to explore, including orchards and a large kitchen garden. The latter supply up to half of the kitchen’s fruit and vegetable needs which has a commendable 30-mile sourcing policy. Food is Modern British with unusual combinations, such as duck with squash purée and kohlrabi fondant, and treacle tart with pumpkin ice cream.

After a breezy walk on the beach or exploring Whitby with its abbey, Dracula associations and busy harbour, return to a dip in the pool or a relaxing spa treatment. Staff are warm, friendly and pop up just when you need them.
