North Adams sits in the north-west corner of New England's famous Berkshires, enjoying the curious distinction of being both the smallest city in Massachusetts and the site of the largest art gallery in the United States. Catch a performance at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, which has a lively annual events programme, pop into quirky art galleries and boutiques, or admire the Sanford Blackinton Mansion before exploring the pretty Berkshire hubs of Lenox and Pittsfield.

Nature lovers will delight in visiting the Natural Bridge State Park, hiking to the summit of Mount Greylock, or kayaking, fishing, sailing and swimming on Windsor Lake. Trek, horse ride or cycle a portion of the Appalachian Trail or the Hoosac Range Trail if you can. The real daredevils can try skydiving!

  • Fly to Albany International Airport, an hour's drive away, or to Boston's Logan International Airport, which is around three hours from North Adams.

  • Travel during the summer months (June to August) for the warmest weather, but do be aware that this is peak season. Come in the spring (April - May) or autumn (September - October) for fewer crowds and great hotel deals. Expect bitterly cold winters!
