About Troyes

Just an hour-and-a-half by train from Paris, Troyes is a beautiful medieval destination for a culture and food-focused weekend away as a couple or with friends and family. Known as ‘the town of ten churches’, Troyes is bursting with heritage landmarks for keen explorers to discover. With accommodation options including charming B&Bs as well as intimate heritage hotels, our pick of the best places to stay in Troyes is a brilliant starting point for planning your trip.

Stroll the old town centre’s cobbled streets — including the lovely Ruelle des Chats — to admire brightly painted half-timbered houses, independent boutiques and family-owned eateries. The Cathedral Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul is one of France’s most striking Gothic edifices, with over 180 stained glass windows, whilst the Sainte-Madeleine and the Basilique Saint-Urban both have fascinating histories. Museum-goers will adore the Musée d’Art Moderne, the Apothecary of the Hôtel-Dieu-le-Comte and the Maison de l’Outil et de la Pensée Ouvrière.

Troyes was the capital of the Champagne region from the 9th Century until the French Revolution, and you’ll find fabulous vineyards surrounding the city. Sample locally grown Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Champagne as you tuck into superb regional cuisine. The Saint Jean quarter’s gastronomic spots are particular highlights, within easy walking distance of some of the best places to stay in Troyes.

The Best Places to Stay in Troyes

For a Charming B&B

  • La Maison M is a lovely B&B housed in an elegant 19th-century building. Pick this place for the attractive light-filled interiors, the intimate feel and the wonderfully central location. Perfect for exploring Troyes.
  • Domaine De La Creuse has five guestrooms in a half-timbered building slightly south of Troyes. Rustic-chic rooms feautre exposed beams and verdant views of the tranquil garden. Enjoy generous terrace breakfasts, before ending days of cycling or city strolling with long soaks in big bathtubs.

For Boutique Luxury

  • La Maison de Rhodes, in the heart of the medieval city, was once owned by the Knights of Malta. Now a romantic boutique hotel with wooden beams and tiled floors set around a historic courtyard overlooking the cathedral, this is a very special spot. The swimming pool — set in the 'priests' garden' — plus the superb regional cuisine at La Commanderie complete the picture.
  • Le Champ des Oiseaux is made up of a collection of timber-framed medieval buildings overlooking a courtyard with an inviting pool. Intimate rooms have exposed wooden beams, cosy beds topped with crisp white sheets, and bathrooms with sink-into tubs. Expect top seasonal cuisine at the restaurant, bicycles for hire and rejuvenating massages. Very central.

TRAVEL INFORMATION

  • Fly to Paris Charles de Gaulle or to Orly Airport and hop aboard the train from Gare de L'Est to Troyes. The journey should take just a couple of hours.
  • Champagne is brilliant for a road trip! Contact our online partner Rentalcars if you would like to hire a car.
  • Visit between June and September for the warmest weather (peaking at around 25°C). The harvest tends to take place in September — times vary slightly for each village — and you'll find that this is a hugely exciting but busy time to visit. April-May and October tend to be quieter and cooler.
