The 12 Best Places to Stay on the Cherbourg Peninsula

NormandyFlickr user fmpgoh

The Cherbourg Peninsula is a strip of land that is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and historic stretches of Normandy. At one end is Cherbourg, close to the D-Day landing beaches, and at the other is the magnificent, fairytale abbey of Mont Saint Michel. In between are white cliffs, green fields home to dairy cows, and tranquil villages and port towns. This is a popular holiday destination, particularly in the summer months, and therefore there is ample choice when it comes to accommodation. Our recommendations for the best places to stay on the Cherbourg Peninsula are quite varied and will suit most agendas whether you are on a family break, a couples' escape, or a gastronomes tour. So why not browse through our collection to start planning your next trip?

For families

Les Rochers

  • Le Grand Hard is an idyllic rural getaway set in the Regional Park of Cotentin and Bessin. Charming and family-run, it feels like a home-away-from-home. With a large family suite, a laidback atmosphere, and plenty of space for little ones to run around — this is a great option for a family getaway.
  • Le Manoir Herouville is an 18th-century manor house set in lovely gardens and well located for visiting some of Normandy's most famed sights. With the opportunity to fish or play tennis on-site plus a separate gîte that offers self-catering accommodation, this is a good choice for families.
  • Another option with a separate gîte for families is Les Rochers. This lovingly restored 16th-century manor house offers airy rooms with an eclectic collection of art and furniture. Although advertised as a B&B, they also offer gourmet dinners on request.

For a traditional stay

manoir de la fieffe

  • The Manoir de la Fieffe is an elegant 16th-century mansion with four bedrooms, set amid peaceful gardens and countryside 3kms outside Cherbourg. There’s a lovely dining room with fireplace dating back to the 16th century and a sheltered terrace where you can breakfast in warmer months. Interiors are traditionally elegant but with beautiful contemporary bathrooms.
  • The Château de Pont Rilly is a grand and beautifully restored 18th century château with just four rooms and plenty of character. The decor is traditional: think marble fireplaces, antiques and parquet floors. Outside the landscaped garden has small canals — a quaint choice.
  • For a grand traditional stay, it doesn't get much better than Chateau de Canisy, a fairytale-like chateau set on a 700-acre estate. Beautifully kept throughout, the property offers numerous reception rooms filled with antiques and roaring fires while each stately guest room is individually dressed. Luxurious in every way.

For romance

chateau de chantore

  • The Château de Chantore is a stunning château hidden in pretty countryside just seven miles from Mont Saint Michel Abbey. There are just five rooms, resplendent with beautifully embroidered furniture and antique wallpapers. The perfect hideaway for two.
  • Le Landemer is a beautifully renovated farmhouse located right on the coast. Smart accommodation boasts marvellous sea views as well as bathrooms with crystal washbasins. Here, the quiet atmosphere, splendid seafood restaurant and secluded location make this the ideal spot for a romantic getaway.

For foodies

Hotel Restaurant Les Ormes

  • Le Mascaret is a charming small hotel set just back from the coast. The decor is kitsch but not overtly so. Outdoors a lovely terrace and a pool are the perfect spot for unwinding . However, it is the Michelin starred dining that really pulls the crowds.
  • For something a little less high brow, Hotel Restaurant Les Ormes, fits the bill. Primarily a restaurant, the fine dining cuisine blends local recipes with a modern twist. Traditional rooms are comfortable and homely and the best have coastal views. With a generous price tag, this is a real hit with foodies.

For great value

la marine

  • La Marine is a bright, affordable, 28 room hotel in Barneville Carteret with modern decor and gorgeous sea views. Some of the more expensive rooms also have private balconies. The seafood restaurant has a Michelin star and there’s a bar and a beautiful terrace.

  • Right down in the south of the Cherbourg Peninsula, close to Mont Saint Michel Abbey, La Ramade is a beautiful converted mansion on expansive grounds. You’re both near to the coast and surrounded by great walking opportunities. Prices start from less than €90 per room per night.
