Hotel Review

An indulgent, romantic, retreat and top spot from which to explore Angkor Wat. Unique activities include tailored bike tours and picnics among the legendary temple ruins. The original Cambodian founder and owner of the resort had it constructed as a gift for his wife Sothea on her 50th birthday to thank her for taking care of their daughter and son while he was away for long spells with the army, this grand villa has since been converted into an impeccable boutique retreat. Inspired by ancient khmer royalty, the hotel comes with open walkways and fragrant frangipani filled courtyards, though these days cold towels meet guests at every turn. There’s a saltwater pool, a first-rate spa and a stunning Khmer-French restaurant, Southea, named after the wife of the owner. Rooms and are laid out like studio apartments and the self-contained suites are designed for romance. Either way you’re in a world of your own. Create your own sunrise picnic or romantic sunset dinner amongst the ruins of Angkor Wat. Nothing is too much trouble and service is exemplary. Visitors couldn’t hope for a better base from which to explore the magnificent Angkor Archaeological Park just a few miles away. Go it alone, or ask the hotel to organise one of their brilliant tours to really make the most of it.

What message would you like to give Hotel Guru readers? Anantara Angkor Resort is the ideal resort from which Hotel Guru readers can explore the UNESCO World Heritage listed Angkor ruins. The resort has introduced ‘Breakfast at Angkor’ to help travellers beat the crowds in a truly unique, indulgent new experience. On the resort’s new, off-the-beaten-track tour, a veteran guide with an encyclopedic knowledge of and special access to the UNESCO World Heritage Site ushers guests to secluded vantage points to watch the day break over the awe-inspiring temples. Under the cover of darkness at 4:30 a.m., the hotel transports guests by private car or tuk-tuk to a temple complex that encompasses more than 400 square kilometres and relics of the Khmer Empire that date back as far as the 9th century. Flashlight in hand, the expert guide escorts guests through the darkened temple compound via a secret shortcut, bypassing the scores of people already queuing to see Angkor Wat as the sun’s first rays emerge. After sunrise, guests repair to one of the more secluded temples close to Angkor Wat where a personal butler is waiting to serve freshly squeezed juice, coffee or tea, an array of tropical fruits and freshly baked pastries. Over breakfast, the guide provides additional background on life in Siem Reap, the history of Angkor, and the wonders of nearby Tonle Sap Lake, where locals dwell in a floating village and fish the mangrove waterways. Because ‘Breakfast At Angkor’ includes an all-day pass, guests are free to explore more temple ruins before returning to the resort.
