Hotel Review

In a sleepy Kentish hamlet lies the remains of 12th-century Thurnham Castle, and just beyond the site sits Thurham Keep, a deceptively young Edwardian country house given its Jacobean-style exterior. Surrounded by seven acres of gardens with views out over the Weald, this house offers not just beautiful grounds but a heated pool, grapevines, a tennis court, a croquet lawn, a summer house formed from a 1920s tram and various ponds – it’s certainly got it all. The interior doesn’t let it down, with only the finest marble, panelling, parquet floors and gorgeous Edwardian furnishings, adding to the aristocratic splendour. At breakfast enjoy homemade jam, honey from the hives and seasonal produce from the kitchen garden, served in the light and airy morning room or on the terrace in summer. Much like a mini resort, Thurnham Keep is perfect for lengthy stays – that summer ‘staycation’ or romantic winter getaway.

Turning up at the grand Jacobean facade felt like stepping into the scene of a Susan Hill ghost story.
