Hotel Review

This former nobleman's house was, until some years ago, a well known pensione, the Casa Frollo, for artists and writers, with its heyday between the wars and in the 50s and 60s. You can see why - it's a stunning location, with the same views as the most expensive hotel in Venice - the Cipriani - just a short gondola ride across the Grand Canal from all the sights, and yet in quiet, sleepy Guidecca - the old Jewish quarter. However, it fell into disrepair, and has recently been rescued and immaculately restored, at great expense, by Francesca Bortolotto Possati, owner of the Bauer, and has emerged as one of the smartest new addresses in Venice for people who value peace and quiet alongside their luxury. It's an all-suite affair - just 11 apartments - with private dining, hotel services, and a wonderfully quiet garden for relaxing in. Guests also have the use of all the Bauer facilities as well as the spa next door, and there are plans to build a pool - a rarity in Venice.
