Landlocked Laos sits at the heart of the Indochinese Peninsula, bordered by Myanmar and China to the northwest, Vietnam to the east, and Cambodia and Thailand around the south. A small country with a rich yet turbulent history, it’s a fascinating destination for culture aficionados as well as outdoorsy explorers. Famously laid-back, Laos has also become a favourite with spiritually minded travellers — particularly those interested in the traditions of Buddhism. Whether you choose to base yourself in the charming capital of Vientiane or to venture to more remote mountain and riverside communities, fabulous accommodation options abound. Our list of the best places to stay in Laos is the perfect starting point for planning your trip!
Most visitors will land in Vientiane, a tranquil city known for its wide boulevards lined with enormous trees and aged French colonial-era residences. Do take the time to stroll through the city, sampling fabulous Laotian food and popping into museums or taking a boat trip along the mighty Mekong River. The country’s other big attraction is the legendary town of Luang Prabang. A UNESCO Heritage Site studded with marvellous ancient temples and monasteries, this was the Kingdom of Laos’ former capital, and remains a spiritual hub. Expect guided temple tours, meditation and yoga classes, and a wonderful celebration of artisanal craftsmanship through workshops and boutiques.
For a more off-the-beaten-track experience, go hiking and mountain biking in the verdant mountains around Vang Vieng, formerly a party hotspot and now a more nature-focused escape. Champasak, to the south, is the gateway to a landscape dotted with ancient temple ruins and leafy islands filled with birdlife. Outdoorsy types need look no further! Whether you're dreaming of a restored royal residence or a tranquil eco-lodge, our pick of the best places to stay in Laos is bursting with top recommendations.
