Hotel Review

Set in the village of Dundlod, this 1750 fort is the ancestral home of Kr Raghuvendra Singh Dundlod (aka Bonnie) of the Shekhawat clan of Rajputs. It’s somewhat rundown – a patchy lawn, faded yellow walls – but wonderful hospitality makes up for it. On arrival, two gleaming Marwari horses, decorated in orange, red and gold, welcome you and waiters in tangerine-orange turbans give you marigold garlands. You then have tea with your host, Bonnie, in the regal reception room, while his two black labradors and mongrel laze at your feet. The spacious guest rooms feel as though they haven’t changed much since the days of the Raj – candles replace bedside lamps and there are oddities aplenty – but this is part of Dundlod’s charm. In some, stained-glass windows fill your room with multi-coloured light in the morning sun. Delicious Rajasthani food is served on the rooftop, surrounded by turrets and with stars twinkling overhead. Shekhawati is the open-air gallery of Rajasthan, so explore the fresco-filled havelis of Dundlod, Nawalgarh and Churi Ajitgarh, or embark on a riding safari, arranged by Dundlod Royal Equestrian and Polo Centre.
