Hotel Review

A gorgeous new addition to Devon's hospitality scene, Hooppells Torr offers just two stunning guest rooms in a charming rural property set amidst six acres of beautiful gardens and grounds. Simon and Jeeva wanted to escape the rat race - and what they have created here is a testament to that desire, enabling their guests to do exactly that. The two rooms are both beautifully decorated and ooze elegance and style. The emphasis here is on stunning interiors and luxury with polished dark wood floors, exquisite white Egyptian bed linen, goose feather bedding, comfy armchairs and gorgeous en suites (one with stand-alone bath, the other with walk-in rain shower). Jeeva studied hotel management and worked for Kit Kemp's Firmdale group for several years, and that experience can clearly be seen here. Always a keen foodie, Simon is in charge of the AGA-cooked breakfasts - he even offers a daily changing special, depending on what's in season - homemade cakes and a curated wine list. To top it all off there's a fantastic indoor salt-water swimming pool - perfect for relaxing after a day exploring the wonderful surrounding countryside and villages. Location-wise it's pretty spot on too! There's an unspoilt beach and 16th century pub which you can walk to, plus the ritzier towns of Salcombe and Dartmouth are not far, and the Dartmoor National Park a short distance away. For a grown-up, luxurious, country getaway it's hard to beat!

See What They Say

Why do your guests love staying with you? Guests regularly comment on the decor of the rooms, the breakfasts, the comfortable beds, the salt water swimming pool, and the gardens where tea and cake are served during the summer. The house is just a 10-minute walk to the local 16th century pub and the local beach is only a mile away. Our guests regularly say that they feel relaxed, rejuvenated and pampered during their stay. We hope that our guests enjoy meeting us and feeling part of our home. What is there to do in the area? Our local beach, Wonwell, is only a walk away and offers an unspoiled and tranquil spot for whiling away the day, and is just one of the many secluded coves, bays and beaches on the South Devon coastline. The famous Burgh Island, accessible on foot at low tide and sea tractor at other times - an experience in itself - is just 10 minutes away. There are plenty of local walks we can recommend. The South West Coast Path offers many gorgeous coastal walks including the Westcombe and Wonwell section which runs through Kingston village and across to Wonwell beach. With its rugged landscape, granite tors, wooded valleys, ancient stone circles and wild ponies Dartmoor National Park shouldn't be missed. For a bit of antique hunting, visit Ashburton, a charming market town and gateway to Dartmoor. When you're done, enjoy a fabulous lunch at the Old Library Restaurant or find a lovely spot by the river or on Dartmoor for a picnic. Similarly, Salcombe is a gorgeous coastal town with its independent shops, cafes and restaurants (and gin distillery tour) only 20-minute drive away. What kind of breakfast do you offer? Our passion is to serve local, seasonal foods representing the very best that Devon and the South West have to offer (including when in season, our own garden). Our AGA-cooked full English breakfast includes local bacon and free-range butcher's sausages, fresh farm eggs, portobello mushrooms and roasted tomatoes. We also offer new local and seasonal specials each day such as Salcombe smoked mackerel with potato latkes and a poached egg, homemade Glamorgan sausages with local Sharpham cheese and beetroot-cured smoked salmon. We serve loose-leaf tea from Devonshire Teas and East Teas of London, freshly ground coffee from Clifton Coffee Roasters of Bristol and Monmouth Coffee of Borough Market, hot chocolate and locally produced apple and pear juices, porridge and granola with yoghurt and compote. Do you offer other meals? And can you recommend good places to eat out locally? We serve wines by the bottle, which can be purchased during your stay. We can recommend number of nearby places to eat out in the local area, notably The Oyster Shack and Journey's End Inn. Which are your most popular room types, and why? The larger of the two rooms, Hydrangea has a thoroughly modern English country style and enjoys wonderful views of the garden. With a luxurious king-sized bed, Egyptian cotton sheets, goose feather bedding and two deep, upholstered armchairs, this is a large and indulgent room. It also enjoys a large en-suite bathroom, where you can relax in the traditional style cast iron bath and listen to the birdsong. Pondicherry is a light and sunny room which features the same sumptuous furnishings as Hydrangea with a gorgeous rainforest shower in the en-suite bathroom. Warm oranges complement its southerly aspect with splashes of pink and cream echoing the Indian elements in the room. Both rooms feature complimentary superfast WiFi, Nespresso machine, Roberts Radio, kettle with selection of teas and complimentary, all-natural Bramley toiletries. What facilities do you have for children and can you fit extra beds in your rooms ? Sadly, we do not take children under 14 or pets.
