Hotel Review

Built in (you guessed it) 1929 this colonial property is now a listed building in the ever changing and ever modernising city of Singapore. Ideal for visitors wanting a lively stay, it is nestled down a colourful street in bustling Chinatown. Owned by Loh Lik Peng, the brainchild behind New Majestic Hotel and quite simply one of the hippest men in town. Similarly, the entire hotel is littered with his favoured collections of retro and antique chairs and funky flairs of design. Not quite as idiosyncratic as his other hospitality ventures, 1929 provides chic accommodation at excellent value for money. In this hotel's case the lower rates mean smaller rooms; small but perfectly formed. Leave the excess baggage at home though as you may have nowhere to unpack it! The room's bijou size is more than made up for with clever design tricks such as under bed storage and in-room bathrooms separated by frosted glass walls. This is all topped off with polished parquet flooring, large windows with pastel coloured shutters and cheerful, bright pattered fabrics. Some of the Deluxe Rooms feature small balconies whilst the Suites have private terraces. Breakfast at the Ember restaurant is nothing special (but for what you pay, quite sufficient to fuel a morning's sightseeing) but their lunch and dinner menus are a fine affair. Try the signature soft shell crab in sweet wasabi oil. A boutique property in the truest sense of the word, 1929 does not feature the amenities of larger hotels: gym, pool or spa. However there are many spas located within easy reach should the Singapore heat get the better of you! Its style and location make it ideal for travelling couples or solo travellers.
