Hotel Review

For a clean, serene and personal place to stay, Riad Berbère offers fresh, neutral-toned rustic chic rooms in a quiet medina neighbourhood. Originally built by a wealthy Moroccan family in C17th, it was renovated by Belgian architect Quentin Wilbaux and opened as a guest house in 1999. For the past 13 years, the place has been run with great flair and efficiency by Belgian-born manager Ingrid who notes that in 1994 there were just 5 riad guesthouses; now there are over 1500. Despite burgeoning competition, she has managed to infuse her riad with feminine touches such as fresh-cut flowers and incense, quality textiles and fine-tuning breakfasts with homemade bread and jams served in stylish homeware. Generous rooms are equipped with every comfort, some with private balcony, while bathrooms are decorated with vintage screens and basketry. It’s enough to inspire regulars to return year after year. Sitting in the verdant courtyard patio with the resident cats asleep on giant floor cushions, you get a wonderful sense of calm away from the chaos outside.
